Solution Summary

  • Nippon Shokubai 's ACRYSET™ BP series has acrylic rubber particles uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin. It has excellent heat resistance and adhesive strength, and can withstand temperatures of around 180°C to 200°C.

  • The dispersion effect of acrylic rubber particles improves the brittleness, which is the biggest drawback of epoxy resin, and also prevents a decrease in heat resistance.

  • It also has excellent crack resistance and water resistance, and achieves stable quality.

Uniformly dispersing acrylic rubber particles in epoxy resin? What are the surprising benefits?

While gathering information from a wide range of sources, Mr. S heard from a trading company about the reputation of Nippon Shokubai 's ACRYSET BP series (hereinafter referred to as "ACRYSET BP"). Intrigued, Mr. S immediately contacted Nippon Shokubai to hear more about the product.

"ACRYSET BP is made by uniformly dispersing acrylic rubber particles in epoxy resin, which is said to be effective in improving the brittleness that is the biggest drawback of epoxy resin. In addition, because it uses an acrylic polymer as the rubber component, it has excellent heat resistance and adhesive strength (T-type peel strength), with a heat resistance temperature of around 180°C to 200°C, so we have a clue to solving our problem," says Mr. S.

Furthermore, the high dispersibility of rubber particles made it suitable for use as a masterbatch. It also had excellent crack resistance and water resistance, and was characterized by the ability to achieve stable quality.

Mr. S was provided with a sample of "ACRYSET BP" and immediately evaluated the prototype. He confirmed that the performance had improved up to the target temperature, achieving both heat resistance and toughness, which had been an issue. He immediately introduced the prototype to several of his customers and received favorable feedback.
We are currently making adjustments to commercialize the product with the aim of adopting "ACRYSET BP."

Mr. S also learned that Nippon Shokubai was developing an alicyclic epoxy resin type that could be expected to lower the viscosity of the compound and improve heat resistance. As this could be expected to be used for other purposes, he began consulting Nippon Shokubai separately.
