Mr. S, who had been continuously gathering information on how to improve dispersion, received useful information from a business partner. The information was that Nippon Shokubai 's PVP has excellent dispersibility for carbon-based materials and is effective in reducing slurry viscosity. Mr. S immediately contacted Nippon Shokubai to ask for advice.
According to a Nippon Shokubai representative, this PVP has the following features: It has high dispersibility in carbon-based materials such as CB and CNT, and is expected to improve the adhesion of the coating film applied to the electrode current collector. It uses NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) with few impurities, which is produced using a unique manufacturing process, as a raw material, and has excellent storage stability.
After listening to the explanation, Mr. S immediately began preparing a slurry sample, using the provided sample as a dispersant.
"As expected, the dispersibility of CB improved, and the slurry viscosity was significantly reduced. Even at a high concentration, appropriate viscosity was maintained, and in addition to obtaining a good coating, we were able to expect that the drying process would be shortened and the electrode film would become thicker by reducing the amount of solvent used. Furthermore, the adhesion of the coating applied to the current collector was improved, which we hoped would lead to a reduction in the rate of defects." (Mr. S)
Based on these results, Mr. S decided to adopt Nippon Shokubai 's PVP and is currently investigating the optimal composition, etc. to propose it to battery manufacturers.
Since Nippon Shokubai is also able to design copolymers with adjusted dispersibility and solvent solubility, Company Q is considering applications other than lithium-ion batteries.
