Friction-reducing gel works in high-salt water
Nippon Shokubai 's AQUALIC™ CS is a salt-resistant water-absorbent resin that can absorb aqueous solutions with high salt concentrations, such as cement water and groundwater.
By applying AQUALIC™ CS to steel materials, the friction between the steel materials and the ground or mortar was reduced by the swelling gel that formed on the steel surface after absorbing cement water and groundwater.
In search of a solution, Mr. M and his team turned their attention to water-absorbent resin, which swells and turns into a gel when it absorbs water. They immediately contacted Nippon Shokubai, the largest manufacturer and distributor of water-absorbent resin, which has expertise in developing products for the civil engineering and construction sectors.
After explaining the situation during a meeting with a representative from Nippon Shokubai, They were introduced to AQUALIC CS, a salt-resistant, water-absorbing resin.
"Because it will be used underground, AQUALIC CS is suitable as it can absorb aqueous solutions with high salt concentrations, such as cement water and groundwater. In addition, the swelling gel of AQUALIC CS is hardly inhibited from swelling even under high pressure in the soil or water. Furthermore, AQUALIC CS can be dispersed in organic solvents, so it can also be processed into a coating agent. I thought this was very promising." (Mr. M)
Thinking that AQUALIC CS could solve the problem, Mr. M immediately received advice from Nippon Shokubai and received a sample of AQUALIC CS along with a binder polymer. Using this, he applied it to steel material at the testing center and carried out an evaluation.
The results of the evaluation exceeded expectations, demonstrating that the steel material was effective in reducing friction between the ground and mortar.
Company P is currently conducting detailed testing and evaluation in preparation for on-site adoption.
