Solutions

Solution Summary

  • Nippon Shokubai 's AQUALIC™ CA is a highly absorbent resin that features excellent absorption properties as well as a large surface area due to its finely crushed particle size.

  • The high surface area provides effective sustained release, achieving the desired effect. In addition, the small particle size and high absorption rate allow for compact size.

The discovery of a high surface area superabsorbent resin led to rapid development progress!

Mr. S, who was searching for a solution and gathering information, obtained information about Nippon Shokubai 's "AQUALIC CA" from a chemical trading company he did business with and immediately contacted them. Later, a Nippon Shokubai representative, who was aware of the situation, provided him with a detailed explanation and a sample.

"Due to its excellent absorption properties, AQUALIC CA, a highly absorbent polymer, is widely used worldwide in sanitary materials such as disposable diapers, pet supplies, and other products, and boasts a high market share. It also has the advantage of a large surface area due to its finely crushed particle size. I was told that this allows the gel particles to absorb liquid containing active ingredients, allowing the volatile active ingredients to be slowly released, which I thought was promising." (Mr. S)

Mr. S immediately created a prototype using the provided sample as a substrate and verified its sustained release properties. As explained, the high surface area enabled effective sustained release even in a small volume, achieving the targeted high performance. In addition, the fine particle size and high absorption rate allowed for compactness at the same time.

Mr. S presented this prototype at an internal review meeting, where he received the go-ahead to commercialize it, and began full-scale consideration of mass production.

Epilogue

When I was discussing the conditions for mass production with a representative from Nippon Shokubai, I learned about another feature of AQUALIC CA: it can absorb not only water and aqueous solutions, but also moisture from the air.
After hearing this, Mr. S had an idea: "Maybe this could be used for various purposes, such as preventing condensation." He created a development plan for the next new product and submitted it to upper management, which approved it and decided to proceed with development.
