It is possible to improve the heat resistance of ABS while maintaining its transparency!
N-Cyclohexylmaleimide
IMILEX-C is N-cyclohexylmaleimide, a maleimide that Nippon Shokubai first commercialized in 1985 using its own proprietary manufacturing technology. It is a monomer that can impart heat resistance to various resins and is widely sold both domestically and internationally. The presence of a cyclohexyl ring makes the copolymer colorless, and it has the advantage of being able to maintain the transparency of various copolymers while achieving a high Tg.

IMILEX-C can be used as a monomer to improve the heat resistance (Tg) of heat-resistant acrylic resins, and improves the heat resistance of transparent ABS resins.
To add it to ABS resin, heat-resistant, transparent ABS resin can be produced by first copolymerizing IMILEX-C with acrylic monomer to produce a heat-resistant acrylic resin, and then melt-kneading this with transparent ABS resin.
| STEP 1 | IMILEX-C | + | acrylic monomer | → *Copolymerization | Heat-resistant acrylic resin |
| STEP2 | transparent ABS resin | + | Heat-resistant acrylic resin | → * Melt kneading | Heat-resistant transparent ABS resin |
If heat-resistant acrylic resin obtained by copolymerization with IMILEX-C is produced in advance, transparent heat-resistant ABS can be manufactured simply by melt-kneading, a simple manufacturing process. In addition, by adjusting the ratio of transparent ABS resin to heat-resistant acrylic resin, the heat resistance (heat deflection temperature, etc.) of the transparent heat-resistant ABS can be easily adjusted.
By melt-blending (alloying) transparent ABS resin with an acrylic styrene resin copolymerized with IMILEX-C, it is possible to improve heat resistance (Tg) by 9°C while maintaining almost the same total light transmittance (97% or more). In Blend Example 1, the Tg is 116°C, but by increasing the amount of IMILEX-C copolymer, further improvements in heat resistance can be expected.
